Former Bafana Bafana captain Thulani Hlatswayo has encouraged SuperSport United defender Ime Okon to opt for South Africa over Nigeria.
Hlatswayo expressed his belief that Okon would face challenges breaking into the Super Eagles team and suggested that he would have a better opportunity representing the Bafana Bafana due to his quality.
“I have advised him to stay in South Africa because it may be difficult for him to secure a spot in the Nigerian national team,” Hlatshwayo stated in remarks reported by Goal.
“To establish himself in the Nigerian national team, he would likely need to play in Europe. However, we would like to see him in the Bafana Bafana squad.”
Hlatswayo pointed out the current options in the South African team’s defense and highlighted the potential contribution Okon could make, considering his eligibility to represent both Nigeria and South Africa.
Okon, aged 20, holds dual eligibility and faces a decision regarding his international career.
