In a highly anticipated international friendly at Stade de Marrakech, Nigeria secured a historic victory over Ghana, marking their first win against their West African rivals since 2006.

The Super Eagles opened the scoring with a well-taken penalty by Cyriel Dessers in the first half, followed by an exquisite finish from Ademola Lookman of Atalanta in the second half.

Ghana’s hopes were further dampened when Jerome Opoku was shown a straight red card, reducing them to 10 men. However, Jordan Ayew managed to pull one back for the Black Stars with a late penalty kick in the 90+5th minute.

The win served as a sweet revenge for Nigeria after the Black Princesses of Ghana defeated the Falconets in a U20 Gold medal African Games fixture the previous day, igniting the age-old rivalry between the two nations.

Social media erupted with reactions following Nigeria’s victory, with fans expressing their delight and bantering their Ghanaian counterparts. Memes and witty remarks flooded platforms, with users teasing each other about everything from jollof rice to electricity supply.

The victory not only ended Nigeria’s 16-year jinx against Ghana but also reignited the passionate rivalry between the two football-loving nations, setting the stage for future encounters with heightened anticipation and excitement.

The rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana sparked wild reactions on social media following the win.
