FIFA U-20 World Cup: Nigeria captain Daniel Bameyi expects tough clash against Italy

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria captain, Daniel Bameyi says his side’s clash with Italy won’t be easy in the U20 World Cup on Wednesday.

Ladan Bosso’s side earned the first three points of Group D of the ongoing championship in Argentina after an own goal by Guillermo De Rena and Samson Lawal’s strike gave them 2-1 win over Dominican Republic in Mendoza.

With Italy seeing off Brazil 3-2 to go top of the table, the Flying Eagles captain believes his side can pull off an upset.

“Our next opponent, Italy beat Brazil and we were able to watch their first half. For them to beat Brazil, we know that it’s not going to be an easy one.” Bameyi told Brila FM.

“We are Nigerians and are not scared of anybody. It was a good game against Dominican Republic with three points despite the fact that we missed a lot of chances.”

Next up for the two-time runners-up of the FIFA U20 World Cup is a clash with Italy at the same venue on Wednesday evening.

A draw will most certainly guarantee a place in the knockout rounds for the Flying Eagles, ahead of their final group phase encounter with Brazil in La Plata on Saturday.

The seven-time African Champions are making their 13th appearance at the FIFA U20 World Cup finals with the best performance at the 1989 and 2005 editions both with a runners-up finish.
