Gateway Games 2024: Flamingos share spoils with Team Abia in National Sports Festival opener

Nigeria U-17 women’s national team started their campaign at the 2024 National Sports Festival with a 0-0 draw against Team Abia on Monday.

The thrilling encounter at the Babcock University pitch, Ilishan-Remo ended in stalemate.

Team Abia goalkeeper put up player of the match performance with several saves to keep Flamingos from scoring.

They remain favourite to in gold at the National Sports Festival but have to improve on their opening matchday goalless draw to avoid more upsets.

Bankole Olowookere’s side is using the tournament to prepare for the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

They saw off Algeria U-17 side on aggregate to qualify for the World Cup this year.

The 2022 bronze medalists hope to return to the podium this year now that the tournament is an annual event.
