Gernot Rohr reveals three favorite deadly Super Eagles players

By Monsurah Olatunji

As the 2025 AFCON qualifiers heat up, Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has singled out three key players in the Nigerian squad to watch ahead of their upcoming clash.

Rohr, who previously guided the Super Eagles to several milestones during his tenure, knows all too well the challenge his team faces as they prepare to meet a Nigeria side that is just one point away from securing their spot in the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

In an interview with NationSport, Rohr praised the quality of Nigeria’s squad, particularly highlighting the attacking prowess of Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon, and Ademola Lookman.

The Franco-German tactician reflected fondly on his time coaching these players, recognizing their growth and development in the years since they played under his leadership.

Among the players Rohr admires, Lookman stands out, especially after his two goals helped Nigeria secure a dominant 3-0 win over Benin in their last encounter.

Rohr’s admiration for the Atalanta winger is evident, but as always, his competitive spirit remains intact. Despite the fond memories, he is determined to halt the Super Eagles’ unbeaten streak under interim coach Augustine Eguavoen.

“We see that in your (Nigeria) list you have Victor Osimhen, Lookman, Moses Simon, and all the big strikers, but I love these players because most of them were with me a few years ago,” Rohr said. “But we hope to stop them and end your unbeaten run.”

With Nigeria’s impressive form under Eguavoen and Benin’s own aspirations to secure a place in the tournament, Rohr’s praise for Nigeria’s stars is tempered by a fierce desire to see his side claim a positive result in the upcoming fixture.

As both teams prepare for the crucial encounter, the stage is set for another high-stakes showdown in African football.
