As Nigeria gears up for their upcoming match against Benin Republic in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has expressed strong support for Ademola Lookman, backing the Atalanta winger to win the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award.
Rohr, who managed the Nigerian national team from 2016 to 2021, described Lookman as a “fantastic player” and a significant threat to his team.
Despite his admiration for the 27-year-old’s abilities, Rohr playfully hoped that Lookman would not find the back of the net against Nigeria when the two sides meet on Thursday.
Lookman has enjoyed a remarkable year, delivering outstanding performances for both club and country.
His most notable achievement was scoring a hat-trick in the Europa League final, helping Atalanta clinch their first-ever European trophy.
Additionally, his inclusion as the only African nominee in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings highlights his growing stature on the global stage.
Rohr acknowledged Lookman’s exceptional form, especially after the winger scored twice in Nigeria’s dominant 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in their last encounter. Despite the praise, the former coach hopes that Lookman’s scoring touch will be kept in check this time around.
“For me, Lookman is the best one in Africa to win the golden award for the footballer of the year; he is a fantastic player,” Rohr said, as reported by Nations Sports.
“But I hope he will not score against us (on Thursday) like he did in the last game in Uyo.”
As Nigeria prepares for a crucial clash in the AFCON qualifiers, Rohr’s comments underscore Lookman’s growing influence in African football, even as the Super Eagles look to extend their dominance in the region.
