Gift Monday bags second NWSL goal as Washington Spirit falter to Angel City in seven goal thriller

Nigeria forward, Gift Monday scored her second goal for National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) outfit, Washington Spirit during a 3-2 loss to Angel City FC at the Audi Field on Saturday.

Riley Tiernan opened scoring for the travelers in the eighth minute.

Siblings, Alyssa Thompson and Gisele Thompson combined to double Angel City FC’s lead in the 22nd minute.

Esme Morgan pulled a goal back for the Spirit in the half hour mark.

10 minutes later, Rosemond Kouassi set up Monday who converted a volley into the net to level the scoreline.

Katie Zelem made it 3-2 in favour of Angel City before Morgan’s second goal in the 89th minute seemed to have secured a point for the host after Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check.

Tiernan scorer the deciding goal from a corner kick which was not defended by the opposing defenders with the last chance of the match.

Monday has scored two goals in four NWSL games for Washington Spirit since joining from Costa Adeje Tenerife in Spain.

Washington Spirit occupies the fourth position on the table with 12 points after seven games.

They will next face Chicago Red Star on May 10, 2025.
