Godfrey Oboabona, a key player in Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations victory, has expressed his strong support for Augustine Eguavoen to assume the role of permanent head coach of the Super Eagles.
Following recent performances, Oboabona believes Eguavoen is the right choice to lead the team forward, emphasizing that with adequate backing, Eguavoen can make a significant impact on the team’s success as they aim to qualify for the AFCON tournament in Morocco.
“I have played under him before. He is a very good coach,” Oboabona stated.
“For the NFF, I don’t know the type of coach they want, but I think Eguavoen is capable. They have to give him the support. We have to give him the support; without which he can’t succeed.”
Eguavoen has recently managed the Super Eagles during two crucial matches in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers, achieving a decisive 3-0 victory against Benin Republic followed by a goalless draw with Uganda.
The West Africans is now preparing for an upcoming doubleheader against Libya.
With the Nigeria Football Federation still searching for a substantive head coach, Oboabona’s endorsement reflects a growing sentiment among players and fans for continuity within the coaching staff.
