‘I would be interested’ – Randy Waldrum eyes vacant Ireland job after Nigeria exit

With the Republic of Ireland searching for a new coach after failure to renew the contact of Vera Pauw with Nigeria senior women’s national team coach Randy Waldrum touted to replace her.
Like Wadrum, the Dutch coach’s contract ended after the Women’s World Cup and could not see her deal extended following allegation of toxic coaching style from her time in the National Women Soccer League (NWSL).
On his part, Waldrum guided Nigeria to the Round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World in Australia and New Zealand, where the team lost on penalties to finalists England but he is unlikely to see his contract extended.
Nigeria and the Republic of Ireland had met in the final Group B match at the tournament which ended in a 0-0 draw and the American who managed the NWSL side from 2014-2017, says he is interested in the vacant Ireland job.
“I have seen a few articles coming out of there [Ireland] mentioning some names, but I don’t know if there would be any kind of interest in me,” Waldrum told Irish Daily Star on Thursday.
“But certainly if the phone rang, I would be interested in a conversation.”
The team played out a 0-0 draw with Olympic champions, Canada before a stunning 3-2 win over co-host Australia.
In an interesting twist of fate, the 66-year-old Waldrum was replaced by Pauw at NWSL side, Houston Dash in 2018.
Pauw’a reign as Irish coach ended after an FAI (Irish football Federation) meeting late on Tuesday night.
