‘I’m going abroad’ – Nigeria star Ashleigh Plumptre hints at her next destination

Nigeria international Ashleigh Plumptre has given a hint on her next club destination following her exit from Leicester City.
Plumptre had joined the English Women’s Super League (WSL) side in 2019 and eventually become a free-agent following the expiration of her contract with Leicester City in July 2023.
With a new deal on the horizon, the former English junior international says she will be joining a club outside England in the coming days before the close of the current women’s football transfer window.
“It would be difficult but I am excited that I am actually going abroad,” Plumptre told Eagles Tracker.
“I will be away from my family. I just have a lot of fire in my belly about what I want to do with the people that I believe in.”
Plumptre made her senior debut for Nigeria in February 2022 after completing her international switch from England and went on to feature at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for the nine-time African champions.
In June 2023, she was named in the 23-player Nigeria squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and started all four games, helping the West Africans to keep three clean sheets before their unfortunate Round of 16 elimination by her country of birth England on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
While refusing to name her new club, Plumptre opened up on how she was convinced to reconsider the offer.
“I can’t actually reveal my next team because it has not been announced,” she added.
“The team that I am going to was a team I was sold to by the coach. Initially, I wasn’t actually interested in the team when my dad (agent) brought the idea to me.
“I had a call with the coach and we spoke about things more than football with things that we want to do. The impact that I want to have, and the connections I want to make which aligns with who I am.
“The coach of my next team is an incredible person that I can’t wait to meet her and play for her with my new teammates too that I have never met.”
