IMC boss Gbenga Elegbeleye explains one-game NPFL opening round schedule

Chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC), Gbenga Elegbeleye has offered explanation to why only a game took place in the opening matchday of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
The Nigerian topflight finally made a return after six months of hiatus and Akwa United and Bendel Insurance in Uyo which took place last Sunday was the only NPFL encounter on schedule.
Two first-half goals from Imade Osehenkhoe and Ismael Seriki secured a 2-0 win for the Benin City-based side away from home in Uyo, while other nine games were not held last weekend.
“The reason why we had a game was due to relationship management with club owners. The IMC wanted an abridged league while the clubs don’t want an abridged league.” Elegbeleye told Brila FM.
“After the agreement for the league to commence, clubs asked for little time to adapt to the new arrangements. That was why we asked Akwa United game with Bendel Insurance to go ahead as the star match.”
 with Promise Keepers and Benin Arsenals opening the season with a 2-0 win for the visitors.
Former league champions, Akwa United will attempt to secure its first win and point of the campaign when it travel to Aba, where they will face off with two-time African champions Enyimba.
On their part, Bendel Insurance, who celebrated a topflight return with a victory will continue their campaign against  Plateau United in Benin City.
