Joe Aribo’s goal not enough for Southampton’s promotion ambition

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria international, Joe Aribo was on target as Cardiff City secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Southampton in an intense Championship clash on Saturday.

The encounter at Cardiff Stadium was pivotal for both teams, with Southampton vying for an immediate return to the Premier League.

The Saints took an early lead in the 12th minute when the Super Eagles midfielder found the back of the net, putting the visitors ahead and setting the tone for the match.

Despite dominating play and squandering numerous chances, Southampton failed to extend their lead, with star player Che Adams hitting the post.

However, Cardiff City fought back resiliently and found the equalizer in the 68th minute when Famara Diedhiou capitalized on an opportunity, assisted by Yakou Meite, to level the score and set the stage for a dramatic conclusion.

In a heartbreaking turn of events for Joe Aribo and his teammates, Cian Ashford struck a 98th-minute winner, securing a late victory for Cardiff and dealing a severe blow to Southampton’s promotion ambitions.

Looking ahead, Joe Aribo and Southampton face a crucial fixture against compatriots Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho’s Leicester City who currently tops the log.

Meanwhile, Southampton remains in 4th place with 84 points from 43 games, still firmly in contention for promotion to the Premier League.
