Joel Obi Eyes Return to Super Eagles for Russia 2018 World Cup Campaign

Renowned Torino midfielder, Joel Obi, is setting his sights on a triumphant return to the Super Eagles, aspiring to grace the 2018 FIFA World Cup stage in Russia, as reported by Completesportsnigeria.com. The determined midfielder last represented the national team three years ago, and with an impressive track record at Torino, he harbors hopes of donning the Nigerian colors once again.

Obi, formerly associated with Inter Milan and Parma, acknowledges the formidable competition within the current Super Eagles squad. However, undeterred, he asserts that his noteworthy contributions this season – scoring thrice and providing five assists in the Italian Serie A – make a compelling case for his inclusion.

In a candid interview with Completesportsnigeria.com, Obi expressed, “It’s good competition there (Super Eagles), and that’s what you want as a player. It’s only normal to have one eye on the World Cup. Every Nigerian player will want to get into that squad, but it’s based on merit. So, you’ll have to play well for your club, and I’m doing that. I’ll focus on doing that, and then if I get the opportunity to play, it would be a dream come true.”

Nigeria, drawn in Group D, is poised to face Croatia at the Kaliningrad Stadium on June 16, 2018, Iceland at the Volgograd Arena on June 22, and Argentina in their final group game on June 26 at the Saint Petersburg Stadium. Obi remains optimistic, emphasizing the importance of clinching victory in the initial match to enhance their prospects for the subsequent rounds.

“We have a good team, but we need to build on our performance. All we need to do is to win our first game, and we could be through to the next round,” asserts Obi, outlining the team’s strategic approach for the impending World Cup campaign.
