John Obi Mikel urges namesake to get Ivan Toney to Arsenal

Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has urged Mikel Arteta and Arsenal to sign Premier League-proven star, Ivan Toney as they aim for the coveted English title.

Ivan Toney has been a prominent player, regularly helping Brentford finish strong in the middle of the league and Mikel believes his goal-scoring prowess might be the missing piece for Arteta’s team, who lost the league in his last two seasons.

However, Tottenham and Gunners were among the elite teams who took notice of the 28-year-old when he scored an incredible 20 goals two seasons, and both teams are still on his radar.

Meanwhile in an attempt to strengthen their attacking power, Arsenal has been linked to other strikers, such as Santiago Gimenez of Feyenoord and Alexander Isak of Newcastle United, but the former Super Eagles captain believed Toney is the answer.

Toney has made 141 appearances for the Bees in all competitions, tallying 72 goals and dishing out 23 assists.

Speaking to BeIN Sports, Obi Mikel emphasised how crucial it is for Arsenal to get a goal scorer with experience like Toney.

“I think a club like Arsenal. He has been linked with Arsenal for quite some time now… They will need someone like that, a goalscorer,” he said on BeIN Sports.

“Havertz is doing really well but Arsenal will need somebody like that, a proven goalscorer. I look at him and I think he has still got a lot to give in the Premier League.

“I think he will probably go to a club in the Premier League. I really think Arsenal will suit Ivan Toney or (Aston) Villa.”
