Joseph Yobo happy with Lookman’s improvements since Super Eagles switch

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Nigeria international Joseph Yobo has praised Ademola Lookman for his remarkable development since committing to represent Nigeria.

The Atalanta star has enjoyed an outstanding season, playing a crucial role in helping the Super Eagles reach the AFCON 2023 final and contributing to his club’s historic win, marking their first major trophy since 1963.

Lookman made headlines by becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in a Europa League final. Prior to switching his international allegiance to Nigeria, he was part of the England U-20 squad that won the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup.

Yobo recounted Lookman’s transformation since he began following his career.

“Lookman is a threat. He has so much talent, and I’ve known this for five years, but now he’s much more mature,” Yobo remarked.

“He was just unlucky not to win the AFCON. In the final, he wasn’t at his best, which shows how important he is to the team.”

He emphasized Lookman’s ability to influence matches, whether through scoring or assisting. “On his best day, he’ll win matches for you. He’s also improved his work rate, tracking back and contributing defensively,” Yobo added. He believes Lookman’s current form positions him as a strong contender for the African Player of the Year award.
