In a stunning turn of events at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester United, ending their impressive unbeaten home run since March. Nigeria international Alex Iwobi, introduced in the 15th minute for the injured Shkodran Mustafi, struggled to make a significant impact as the Gunners faced a formidable United.
United took an early lead in the fourth minute, capitalizing on a defensive error. Antonio Valencia intercepted Laurent Koscielny’s pass, executed a skillful exchange with Paul Pogba, and fired a low strike past Petr Cech.
Just five minutes later, Jesse Lingard doubled United’s lead with a clinical finish. Shkodran Mustafi’s mistake in possession allowed Romelu Lukaku to set up Anthony Martial, who, in turn, provided an excellent assist to Lingard.
Arsenal showed resilience and managed to reduce the deficit four minutes into the second half, thanks to Alexandre Lacazette’s goal, set up by Aaron Ramsey.
However, Lingard secured his brace in the 63rd minute, coolly finishing after a setup by Pogba. The latter, despite his impactful performance, received a red card in the 74th minute for a reckless challenge on Hector Bellerin.
Despite playing with a numerical advantage, Arsenal failed to mount a successful comeback, succumbing to their first home defeat in months.
The defeat at the hands of Manchester United leaves Arsenal contemplating their strategies, while United celebrates a crucial away victory under the management of Jose Mourinho.
