Martin O’Neill Backs Kelechi Iheanacho to Rediscover Peak Form After Match-Winning Heroics

Manager Martin O’Neill has praised Kelechi Iheanacho following the striker’s decisive impact in Celtic FC’s 2–1 away victory over Dundee FC on Sunday.

Iheanacho proved to be the difference-maker, coming off the bench to score the winning goal and secure all three points for the Hoops in a tightly contested encounter.

Speaking after the match, O’Neill reflected on the Nigerian forward’s challenging spell since joining the club, revealing that injuries have hampered his progress.

“When I arrived, he was recovering from a hamstring injury, which he picked up very early in a game,” O’Neill said.

“Then he was brought back into the side and unfortunately suffered the same injury again in the cup final, so he’s been fighting his way back.”

The Celtic boss also disclosed that he held a frank discussion with Iheanacho about his career trajectory, encouraging the 29-year-old to rediscover the form that once made him one of the most promising forwards of his generation.

“I’ve spoken to him and told him he’s been a really fine player in his career. At 29, he should be at the peak of his career rather than struggling at times. That’s the key point,” he added.

O’Neill went on to highlight Iheanacho’s strengths in attack, emphasizing his ability to influence games in the final third.

“He scores goals, he can hold the ball up very well, and he’s strong in that aspect.

He may not run the channels as much, but ultimately, he brings quality and presence up front,” he concluded.

Iheanacho’s latest contribution could signal a turning point in his season, as he looks to regain consistency and establish himself as a key figure in Celtic’s campaign.
