Mercy Akide: Nigeria legend vows to support her kids to represent United States

By Monsurah Olatunji

Foremost Africa Women’s Player of the Year winner Mercy Akide has hinted that her daughters will represent the US women’s national team rather than their fatherland, Nigeria.

Married to a renowned sports journalist, Collin Udoh, Mercy is a mother of two daughters in the United States and  was the first-ever African women’s accolade in 2001 and named in the FIFA World All-Star in 2004.

Akide-Udoh represented Nigeria at three Women’s World Cups and helped the country to three Africa Women’s Cup of Nations success, is currently part of the coaching staff of Virginia Rush Soccer Club, in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

In a chat with NaijaMade, a Supersport TV show, the former Super Falcons number 10, is opting never to force or convince her kids to represent Nigeria if they decided against following in her footsteps at a professional level.

“It’s up to them to make the decision but I will be there to support them,” Akide-Udoh said on the TV show.
“I’m not going to convince them to pick Nigeria just because it’s their fatherland. They have read and heard about players’ welfare by the Nigeria Football Federation and they see what’s happening around them.
” I am sure they know the difference. I don’t want to pass sufferings to my kids. They should not experience what I passed through in my playing days. That’s why I will support any decision they make.

“Who wants to suffer? We did it in our own time, this is a new generation, and they should not be suffering what we suffered.”
