The 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has been postponed once again following the Nigeria Football League Annual General Congress coming up in Uyo this weekend.
In a statement on Wednesday, organisers confirned that the Nigerian topflight earlier slated to commence on September 9, 2023, has been postponed indefinitely.
In a letter signed by the league’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Davison Owumi to Chairmen and General Managers of clubs dated September 6, 2023, the postponement of the league was confirmed.
Exigencies connected to the sponsorship of the league were cited as the major reason for the postponement.
The league was expected to announce a key sponsor this week but it seemed the announcement won’t be made as a result of the recent development.
In a release by the league partner media officer, GTI’s Andrew Ekejiuba, the need to have members focus on the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Wich holds in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, was cited for the postponement.
There will be no flag-off game as initially planned for Saturday, September 9, between Shooting Stars and Plateau United. A new date according to the letter will be communicated to all clubs in due time.
The 2023/2024 NPFL season is expected to be a straight league where the 20 teams play 38 games in a bid to become league winners and jostle for continental qualification.
The recent postponement made the straight league another course of concern as aligning the league with what is obtainable in Europe remained doubtful.
