Nigeria goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi set for Swallows debut, gets work permit

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is now eligible to play for his new club Swallows FC after getting his work permit.

The Nigerian International was among the players released by the Chiefs at the end of last season and he was close to joining Sekhukhune United ahead of the 2022/23 campaign but his deal eventually fell through.

He had been without a club since leaving Amakhosi last July and had been training with Swallows FC earlier in the campaign already, but the Soweto side wasn’t able to resolve their transfer ban, leaving the player in limbo.

The Nigerian shot-stopper was confirmed to have signed for the Dube Birds on a short-term contract until the end of the season soon after the club successfully had their FIFA ban overturned last month.

Coach Ernst Middendorp has not hidden the fact that he is eager to see Akpeyi between the sticks given that his experience will be a big boost for the side.

The award-winning goalkeeper is still considered strong and agile to carry on with the business of football for more years to come.

The 36-year-old, who has been training with the Dube Birds will be available for selection when they visit Chippa United on Sunday.
