‘Nigeria have what it takes’ – Ashleigh Plumptre seeks Australia scalp

Nigeria defender Ashleigh Plumptre is very optimistic that with more dedication and teamwork, Nigeria will upset the co-hosts Australia in their second Women’s World Cup tie on Thursday.
The Super Falcons had held Olympic champions Canada to a 0-0 draw by Nigeria in their Women’s World Cup opener after goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie denied Christine Sinclair from the spot.
With neither team able to secure a victory, winning the next two group-stage matches becomes more crucial as a loss for either Nigeria or Canada in their next matches would make advancing out of Group B very difficult.
“I think we’ve shown with our performance today (on Friday against Canada) what we are capable of,” she said after the match.
“I believe we have what it takes to win our next match against Australia on Thursday in Brisbane.”
The 25-year-old was superb and defended nicely as well as being a solid rock at left-back, calmly shutting down Canada attacking runs from the right side. The full-back completed three tackles, one interception, and two clearances and also ensured she wasn’t dribbled past on Friday.
