Nigeria W 3-0 Tunisia W: Super Falcons beat North Africans in WAFCON 2024 opener

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team recorded a 3-0 win over Tunisia in their opening Group B clash at 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Sunday.

Goals from Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and substitute, Chinwendu Ihezuo lifted the Super Falcons to victory over the North Africans at the Store Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca.

Oshoala opened scoring for the nine time African champions in the fourth minute as converted a well taken free kick from Babajide.

In the additional minutes of the first half, Babajide doubled the lead with a left footed strike inside the box.

The goal was recorded after initial Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check for foul by Oshoala.

Ashleigh Plumptre thought she had scored for Justine Madugu’s side but her headed was ruled out for a foul before the half time break.

The second half was a tight contest with both sides measuring themselves up before Madugu made some key changes resulting into the third goal.

Ihezuo’s left footed strike inside the box from Plumptre’s cross led to the third.

Nigeria moved top of Group B with three points ahead of Botswana’s clash with Algeria.

They will next face Botswana on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
