Nigerian goalkeeper Rita Akarekor joins Moroccan side AMLFF

Nigerian goalkeeper, Rita Akarekor has joined Moroccan women’s top-flight side, Association Municipal Laâyoune de Football féminin (AMLFF).

The former Nigerian Under 20 (U-20) save hands joined AMLFF from Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership side, Nasarawa Amazons on a one-year deal.

Akarekor has played for Bayelsa Queens and Sunshine Queens in the top tier NWFL Premiership before joining Nasarawa Amazons from where she is pitching her tent with the El Botola Pro outfit, AMLFF for the coming league season.

She was part of coach Christopher Danjuma’s 21-woman squad for the 2018 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in France alongside the likes of Chiamaka Nnadozie, Monday Gift, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Christy Ucheibe to mention a few players.

Akarekor during the 2021/2022 NWFL Premiership season was behind the sticks as Nasarawa Amazons qualified for the NWFL Super Six.

At the Super Six in Benin City, Nasarawa Amazons finished in the second position behind league Champions, Bayelsa Queens with Akarekor’s experience in goal for the Northern side.

The 2022/2023 El Botola Pro will commence on the 16 of October 2022 as the goalkeeper will be expected to play her debut game for AMLFF.A

Akarekor and her new team will hope to dethrone league Champions and TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League campaigners, ASFAR FC at the end of the 2022/2023 league season.

The 2016 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations winner will hope to make her debut with the Moroccan giants in coming days.
