Nigerias Randy Waldrum sounds Women’s World Cup Round of 16 warning to England

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria are through to the Round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup, escaping a group featuring World No.10 Australia – the tournament co-hosts – as well as World No.7 and Olympic gold medallists Canada.
A 0-0 draw to Canada preceded a resounding 3-2 win over the Matildas, before another goalless draw against Ireland to send Nigeria through to a knockout clash to set a date with European Champions and No. 4 ranked team.
In the process of qualifying for the Round of 16, Waldrum became the first head coach of the Super Falcons to go through a Women’s World Cup group stage unbeaten.
Just last year, Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses won the UEFA Euros on home soil, and come into this year’s World Cup as one of the hot favourites to win the lot and Waldrum’s rallying cry when he pondered the possibility.
“Why not play England? We’ve played the Olympic gold medallists. We’ve played Australia, the host nation. So bring on the European champions,” Waldrum told media.
“We’ll take some time tomorrow and start to break down their match videos, and we’ll come up with a plan
“I’ll just say: don’t count us out, that would be the best thing I could say. Against England, don’t count us out. We’ll be prepared.”
