NPFL: Chigozie rallies Niger Tornadoes ahead of high-stakes clash at Enugu Rangers

By Dayo Awoniyi

Niger Tornadoes will aim to sustain their impressive start to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign when they face Rangers International in an encounter on Sunday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.

The Minna-based side, currently fifth on the table, have emerged as one of the league’s most exciting teams, leading the NPFL in goals scored with 17.

Their strong away form—one win and one draw on the road—has further strengthened their credentials as early contenders.

Attention will be on dynamic midfielder Ani Chigozie, who returns to his hometown for the highly anticipated fixture.

The Enugu-born playmaker expressed excitement at the opportunity to face Rangers, a club he regards as his “Fatherland team.”

“I feel so happy touching down in my hometown and playing against my Fatherland club,” Chigozie said.

Since joining Tornadoes from Enyimba FC, Chigozie has played a pivotal role in the team’s midfield, providing energy, stability, and creativity, assuring  supporters that despite the emotional significance of the match, his focus remains firmly on delivering for Tornadoes.

“It’s always a great feeling playing against one of the most successful clubs in Nigeria,” he noted.

“Nothing has changed—we’ll just get on the field and do what we know how to do best.”

Tornadoes defeated Rangers 2–1 in Enugu in the corresponding fixture last season, and Chigozie believes the team can once again secure a positive result despite the Flying Antelopes’ recent resurgence.

Majin Mohammed’s side sit on 20 points from 13 matches, while Rangers are close behind in seventh place with 19 points, setting the stage for a tightly contested and evenly balanced showdown in the Coal City.
