Enyimba International FC of Aba got off to an impressive note with a 2-1 win over Nasarawa United away from home in Jos on Sunday.
After losing 3-2 the NPFL pre-season Super 4 tournament final to Shooting Stars, the People’s Elephants were determined to correct pre-season mistakes with its opening Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game.
Former Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministry Football Club (MFM FC) midfielder Akanni Elijah opened the scoring for Finidi George’s team in the 32nd minute from a thunderous shot outside the box.
Five minutes later, Imoh Obot doubled the visitors’ lead as he headed in Enyimba’s second goal as the team heads into a 2-0 halftime lead.
The hosts tried to get back into the game in the second half and were rewarded in the 87th minute.
Josiah Oche reduced the deficit for Nasarawa United three minutes from full time from a rebound after Olorunleke Ojo had saved the initial penalty.
The goal was mere consolation as the two-time African Champions returned to Aba with three points.
Enyimba occupy the second position with the win, the same points as leaders, Bendel Insurance on goal difference.
The People’s Elephants will next host Akwa United on January 18 while Nasarawa United will hope to return to winning ways away against El Kanemi Warriors next weekend.
