The much talked about Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL Super 6 championship will get underway on Saturday, 3rd of June where six teams will be jostling for honors and titles.
The championship will be held at the famous Mobolaji Thompson Arena in Lagos.
Six teams including defending champions, Rivers United, Lobi Stars, Insurance FC, Sunshine Stars, Remo Stars and Enyimba FC will face another hurdles of getting positive results after surviving the rigorous challenge in the regular season that was played in an abridged format.
We take a look at what is on the card as they head for the opening day fixtures of the championship.
REMO STARS VS ENYIMBA – 2pm
Top of the opening day fixtures is the encounter that will herald the championship between Remo Stars and Enyimba.
Both teams participated in the same group during the regular season. Remo got better of Enyimba in the first let with a slender 1-0 win while Enyimba could not replicate same feat in the reverse fixture as both settled for 1-1 draw.
Remo will be going to the match with more confidence and believe they maintain their superiority over the Peoples’ Elephants.
However, Enyimba are specialist in competition like this looking at how they fared in the previous editions.
They won the last Super Six organized to determine league champions and they will also rely on that with experience in the league to get over their opponent.
SUNSHINE STARS VS RIVERS UNITED – 4pm
This encounter is the mirror of opening fixture as both Sunshine and defending champions, Rivers United were in Group B of the abridged league where the two games involving both teams ended in draw.
While the first match in Port Harcourt ended in goaless, both teams settled for one all in the reverse fixture held in Akure.
Coach Edith Agoye has been talking tough of his team’s readiness to make significant impact at the Super 6 while Coach Stanley Eguma is desperately ready to defend the title they won last season.
The outcome of the match slated for 4pm on Saturday will go a long way to determine of both teams will achieve their set targets.
BENDEL INSURANCE VS LOBI STARS – 6pm
The last fixture of the opening day truly explained ‘save the best for the last’ as it different kind of fixture where both teams will be meeting each other for the first time this season.
While Insurance went through the season without tasting defeat seeing them finished as Group A leaders, Lobi Stars had a decent season under Coach Baba Ganaru where they finished second behind Rivers United and will will be out to put a clog on the Benin Arsenal’s blistering runs.
The opening day fixtures is expected to set the tone for how the Super Six will pan out and one that will offer bookmakers opportunities to pick favorites for the title and two others for the continental slots.
Whichever way it ended, the 2022/2023 abridged season has offered lots of talking points and the Super 6 Championship will not be an exception.
