Chairman of the Nigeria Women Football League, Ms. Nkechi Obi has revealed that the collaboration between the league body and the Spanish La Liga is targeted at the development of grassroots football.
The NWFL and the La Liga of Spain deepened their partnerships at the FIFA Women’s World Cup final Watch in Lagos organized by the NWFL and sponsored by La Liga in Lagos in a move to endear potential sponsors to embracing women’s football in the country.
In 2018, the country’s ruling body for the women’s game, had entered in a five-year partnership with the Spanish outfit under the watch of Aisha Falode.
Obi, who replaced erstwhile boss Falode in July 2023, assured that the freshly extended and deepened collaborations will help unearth more talents in football in Nigeria for future competitions in the women’s game.
“With this (collaboration) now, we could do a bit of backward integration and go back to the grassroots, they (La Liga) are interested in grassroot programs,” she told reporters at the event.
“So, that’s what our state league is, it’s a grassroot program that seeks to develop clubs at state level and, then, let those clubs move into the championship and by extension, by promotion into the premiership.
“So, they’re interested in that backward integration because it helps us to find players. It helps to build the game at grassroots, it helps development.
“The collaboration is going to be beefed up and have more impact that helps in capacity development,” she concluded.
