NWFL Premiership: Chris Danjuma emphasizes winning mentality at Nasarawa Amazons

Christopher Danjuma, the head coach of Nasarawa Amazons, has underscored the significance of having the right mentality in securing victories in the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership.

Following their 3-1 triumph over Dannaz Ladies at home, Danjuma emphasized the importance of cultivating a winning mindset, particularly in a league as competitive as the NWFL.

In a post-match interview, Danjuma highlighted the evolution and rebuilding process undergone by Nasarawa Amazons, especially after losing a significant number of players during the last summer transfer window.

Despite these challenges, Danjuma expressed satisfaction with the attitude and hunger displayed by the current squad, emphasizing their determination to succeed not only in the league but also on the continental stage.

“Winning is a mentality and you always thank God when things are going right or wrong for you. God have been helping us,” Danjuma told the Press after the game against Dannaz Ladies.

“This is a team that’s evolving. At the beginning of the season, we lost almost 21 players and we say we were rebuilding and God is helping us in getting the right attitude and right approach. Players that have the right hunger knowing what it takes to be at the Super Six and the continent.

“It’s not an intention, it’s level of professionalism. In England, you find people playing matches Wednesdays and Sundays, they are human beings like us. All we need to do is to use your level of thinking. They don’t only become professionals or great players that play only on Saturdays, they play from one competition to the other. They are just coming from an international break and you find them in the league, so what’s the difference in us?

“A game becomes difficult when you are not putting your acts together to get goals but immediately you begin to get it, you don’t get confused when it’s not going but see how you try to balance and get the best out of your players because they are human beings.”

Acknowledging the inclusion of players who recently participated in the Africa Games, Danjuma defended their professionalism, stating that winning is indeed a mentality. He drew parallels with the rigorous schedules faced by players in top leagues around the world, emphasizing the need for adaptation and a high level of thinking.

Looking ahead, Danjuma outlined the team’s objectives, expressing confidence in their ability to secure a spot in the Super Six playoffs. He stressed the importance of taking each game seriously and maintaining a positive mentality throughout the season.

“The target now is by the grace of God after our next home match, we are already one leg in the Super Six. We want to take it one at a time making sure that we don’t accidentally get into any stage,” he continued.

“When we get to the Super Six, we will know that we got there having great mentality and see how we can surpass whatever records we have got before now.”

With Nasarawa Amazons currently occupying second place in the league standings, Danjuma and his team are gearing up for their next challenge against Abia Angels at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba. As they continue their quest for success, Danjuma remains committed to instilling a winning mentality in his players, ensuring they reach new heights in the NWFL Premiership.
