Olympic gold winner Garba Lawal admonishes Nigeria players at FIFA U20 World Cup

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Nigeria international Garba Lawal has offered a piece of advice for the Nigeria U20 men’s team ahead of their second group stage clash with Italy at the ongoing FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina on Wednesday.
The Flying Eagles defeated the Dominican Republic 2-1 in their opening match and will on Wednesday square up with Italy who also earned a 3-2 win against Brazil.
However, the Olympic Gold medalist who starred with Nigeria’s Dream Team in Atlanta 1996 admonished the youngsters on taking full advantage of competing on the biggest stage by showcasing their raw talents.
“People in different countries around the world watch the World Cup,” Lawal told Brila FM.
“If you want to change your life as a young player, this is the avenue to do so, at the World Cup.
“When I was still playing, at the Olympics (1996), we played a friendly against Togo in Lagos, and lost 3-1. Nobody gave us the chance, because that squad was smart, knowing what they have and what they want.
“So the players themselves can change the rhythm, as long as they can believe in themselves.”
