Nigeria international Asisat Oshoala deservedly won player of the match as Barcelona ran riot with nine goals defeat of Benfica in the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage encounter.
The Super Falcons striker provided assists for the Barca’s two opening goals of the dominating night as the hosts were in front within first minute of the match thanks to Patricia Guejjero strike.
Oshoala’s second assist helped Aitana Bonmati to get the Catalans’ second goal in the 14th minutes before putting her name on the score sheet with a long range strike four minutes after half hour mark.
The hosts who are looking to get the group stage job done as quickly as possible were undone with the goals in the second half.
Five more goals would then be scored by the hosts to the admiration of fans at the Johan Cruyff’s Stadium.
Mariona Caldentey, Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic, Claudia Pina, a brace from Geyse and a time for Oshoala to record her second of the night.
After seven goals down, Oshoala’s compatriot Christy Ucheibe was a second half substitute for SL Benfica but couldn’t offer much for the visitors, talk more of getting a consolation.
With two goals and two assists, Oshoala was named UEFA’s best player of the match.
No doubt, Barcelona will sit comfortably on the Group D log with the goal margin but same points with Bayern Munich who had earlier defeated Rosengard 2-1 in Munich.
Barcelona will next take on Rosengard in Malmo on 27th of October as Oshoala and her teammates are looked upon to continue with the decent runs on the domestic scene.
