Randy Waldrum gives contract updates amid Nigeria sacking rumours

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Head coach of Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, Randy Waldrum has revealed that he is still in contract with the Nigeria Football Federation.
His comments come just days after reports in the media claim that the contract of the American, who also double as the University of Pittsburgh manager has expired after the Women’s World Cup.
Waldrum replaced erstwhile manager Thomas Dennerby in October 2020 and guided the Super Falcons to a fourth-place finish at the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco before he led the team to the Round of 16 stage at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
“I’m seeing reports that I’ve been sacked but my contract doesn’t end until October 31,” Waldrum told PUNCH Sports Extra.
With the NFF yet to decide on his extension, the American is still reportedly in line to be in the dugout when the Super Falcons face Ethiopia in a Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers later this month.
He has shown interest in the job and is ready to take the team through the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifiers despite also showing interest in the vacant position of the Republic of Ireland.
Sources in Ireland have it that the American is interested in taking over the Irish job after the sack of Vera Pauw.
In 28 games since 2021, he has led the team to Turkish Women’s Cup, Aisha Buhari Cup, Revelation Cup, WAFCON 2022 and US Summer Series. The team has won 11, drawn four, and lost 13 games with Waldrum in charge.
