Reading’s Sone Aluko and Taiwo Awoniyi of Royal Excel Mouscron extended their goal droughts after failing to find the back of the net in their respective matches on Boxing Day.

Aluko, playing for Reading, endured a frustrating 90 minutes as his team suffered a 2-0 defeat away at Bristol City in the English Football Championship. Jamie Paterson opened the scoring in the 68th minute, before Lloyd Kelly sealed the victory in stoppage time. The loss pushed Bristol City into second place in the Championship table, trailing leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers by eight points.

This disappointing result also marked Aluko’s ninth consecutive game without a goal this season for Reading. The Nigerian forward, who has scored only twice in 19 English Championship appearances, last found the net in their 4-2 triumph over Derby County on November 4, 2017.

Meanwhile, in Belgium, Awoniyi provided an assist for 10-man Royal Excel Mouscron in their 4-2 away defeat to league leaders Club Brugge. Despite his contribution, Awoniyi’s goal drought extended to six games this season. The former Nigerian youth international last scored in Mouscron’s 3-1 loss to Gent on November 24, 2017.

In Turkey, William Troost-Ekong featured for Bursaspor in their Turkish Cup first leg game against Genclerbirligi. However, Troost-Ekong’s team suffered a 1-0 defeat, with Petar Skuletic netting the only goal of the match in the 24th minute. Mikel Agu, Troost-Ekong’s compatriot, was not included in the match day squad.

These goalless performances by Aluko and Awoniyi may be a cause for concern, as both players will be hoping to rediscover their scoring touch to contribute more to their teams’ success in the coming matches.
