Ryan Mason offers key fitness update on Josh Maja ahead of Championship opener

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye

West Bromwich Albion head coach Ryan Mason has delivered a crucial update on striker Josh Maja’s fitness ahead of the Baggies’ Sky Bet Championship opener against Blackburn Rovers at The Hawthorns.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Mason emphasized the club’s cautious approach to Maja’s return, following the forward’s extended absence due to a stress injury that has sidelined him since January.

“I think I mentioned it a week ago that he’s had a hell of a long time out and we have to get it right with him,” Mason said.

“We value him and we know what he can bring to the table in terms of when he’s fit, but also understanding it’s a really long season, it’s intense, it’s relentless, and we want to make sure that when he’s on the pitch, he stays on the pitch.”

Mason confirmed that Maja trained with the team ahead of the season opener and is now available for selection, though a final decision will be made closer to kick-off.

“He trained today, so he’s available for selection along with plenty of other players. We’ll assess that after this and we’ll see tomorrow,” he added.

Maja, Albion’s top scorer last season, has been carefully eased back to full fitness throughout pre-season.

He made a brief appearance against Lincoln City but sat out the Rayo Vallecano friendly after experiencing a minor reaction. The 25-year-old rejoined full training this week and could feature in the curtain-raiser if deemed fully ready.
