Singida Black Stars Clear Nigerian Goalkeeper Amas Obasogie of Match-Fixing Allegations

Singida Black Stars SC of Tanzania have cleared Nigerian goalkeeper Amas Obasogie of any involvement in match-fixing allegations following an internal investigation conducted by the club.

The club confirmed the development in a statement issued on March 7, 2026, and signed by its Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan Kassano, after concerns were raised by fans, management and other stakeholders over a number of costly mistakes in recent matches.

The incidents occurred during Singida Black Stars’ fixtures against Flambeau du Centre in the CAF Confederation Cup, as well as domestic league games against Pamba Jiji FC and Namungo FC in the NBC Premier League.

According to the statement, the club’s disciplinary committee launched a preliminary investigation after the incidents triggered suspicion among supporters and observers.

However, following a detailed review that included the goalkeeper’s defence and clarification from the club’s general manager, Singida Black Stars concluded that there was no evidence of match manipulation or deliberate poor play.

“The incidents that raised concerns have been determined to be technical errors within the game,” the club said in the statement.

Following the outcome of the investigation, Singida Black Stars have reversed their earlier decision to suspend Obasogie for three months, allowing the Nigerian shot-stopper to resume his duties with the team.

The club also disclosed that Obasogie apologised for the circumstances that led to the misunderstanding and pledged to improve his performances in order to regain the confidence of fans and stakeholders.

The situation had earlier drawn the attention of former Edo State Deputy Governor and Director General of the National Institute for Sports, Philip Shaibu, who wrote to the Tanzanian club urging caution in making allegations against the Nigerian goalkeeper without a thorough investigation.

Shaibu, who previously served as chairman of Bendel Insurance FC, warned that the club could face legal action if the accusations were not properly examined. He maintained that Obasogie had shown professionalism and reliability during his time in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

During his stint with Bendel Insurance, the goalkeeper played a key role in the club’s historic unbeaten league run, a performance that eventually earned him a move to Singida Black Stars in Tanzania.

With the investigation now concluded and the suspension lifted, Obasogie is expected to return to action as Singida Black Stars continue their domestic and continental campaigns.
