Remo Stars FC defender Sodiq Ismail has voiced his disappointment following the resignation of Finidi George as the head coach of the Super Eagles.

Ismail, who had an outstanding 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with 13 assists and one goal, received his first call-up to the national team thanks to George.

The 20-year-old made history as the first player from Remo Stars to be called up to the Super Eagles.

His debut came during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers last month, where he appeared as a substitute in the 2-1 defeat against Benin Republic, and was an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw against South Africa. Following these results, the Super Eagles find themselves in fifth place in their qualifying group with only three points.

The recent resignation of Finidi George, after just two games in charge, has left Ismail disheartened.

He expressed his regret and hopes to gain valuable insights from the incoming management.

“I’m saddened by the coach’s resignation. However, I hope to learn from the new manager and his team when they come on board,” Ismail told Sportsboom.

He recalled George’s clear and simple instructions during the games, which he found valuable. “It was an honour to represent my country, and I believe it will significantly benefit my career,” Ismail added.
