South Africa coach Hugo Broos keeps focus ahead of Nigeria Showdown

South Africa’s path to the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains firmly in their hands as they prepare for a decisive Group C qualifier against Nigeria at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday night.

South Africa lead the group with 16 points from seven matches, while Nigeria sit third on 10 points after the same number of games.

Despite the permutations and pressure surrounding the table, head coach Hugo Broos insists his side must only concentrate on themselves.

“You just have to look at yourself, and I think this is something we have to do here too,” Broos said

“We do not have to count on Rwanda, Benin or anyone else doing us favours in the group. We know what we have to do, and we will try to do that, and if we can achieve it, we will qualify for the World Cup.”

Broos also dismissed any distractions over match scheduling or other results in the group.

“I do not look at games and say, ‘oh this team is playing after us and we played before them’. You just have to focus on your own game and that is what we will do. What happened before or afterwards, that is not important if we do what we have to do.”

With three matches left in the qualifying campaign, victory over the Super Eagles would move South Africa closer to their dream of returning to the World Cup stage for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010.
