Nigerian star, Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed his gratitude with testimony in church following Nottingham Forest’s escape from relegation in the 2022/23 Premier League season.
The Nigerian forward scored the goal that sealed Forest’s safety in the English top-flight this season in their 1-0 victory over second-placed Arsenal.
Awoniyi’s impressive goalscoring form in the just-concluded season, secured a 16th-place finish for the newly promoted side.
The Super Eagles striker had a great start to his time in the Premier League, scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances, and an additional one goal for Forest in the EFL Cup.
His tally saw him finish as the club’s top scorer in the season, a goal more than Brennan Johnson who had finished as their top-scoring player when they got promoted to the Premier League in 2022.
On return to Nigeria, the Kwara-born striker paid a visit to the Eternity Network International (ENI), run by popular Nigerian televangelist Apostle Joshua Selman.
A video making the rounds on the internet, captured the moment the striker testified at Koinonia Ministry, Nigeria, expressing gratitude to God over the survival of his team in the top flight.
“My name is Awoniyi Taiwo. I just want to give God the glory and thank our Daddy (Joshua Selman) for the privilege he has given to every one of us here,” began Awoniyi’s narration.
“I moved to England with my family. The beginning was really tough. I had no idea what was going on. My wife said to me, ‘You don’t play the way you used to do anymore.’ And that was true.
“So, on May 7, I think, Daddy was preaching about the ways of God. The first statement that I heard was that ‘everyone should return to the pattern that they used to praise God.’
“That Monday, we had a game in the night, I was on my knees from 6am to 12noon. That night, that was the easiest game that I have played in my life. And I scored twice.
”The day I was privileged to see Pastor Joshua Selman, he prayed for me and that was the turning point of my life.
“Every time I used to listen to Daddy’s sermon and that has really helped. Before the season ended, I went for revival for two days in which I told my wife that I won’t be at home.
“My club, which was really struggling for relegation, moved from that zone and stayed in the league. I just want to give all the glory to God.”
