Tanger Med Plans Major Passenger Terminal Expansion Ahead of 2030 FIFA World Cup

Morocco’s Tanger Med Port is preparing for a significant expansion of its passenger terminal as the country gears up to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
Mr. Hicham Kharoufi, Port Call Optimization Manager at Tanger Med, revealed the plans while speaking to African journalists during a guided tour of the facility. He explained that the expansion is aimed at managing the expected surge in visitors during the global football showpiece.
According to Kharoufi, the port currently handles around 30,000 passengers per day, a figure that authorities intend to double to 60,000 daily passengers by 2030.
“We hope to increase that number to 60,000 by the time the World Cup comes around in 2030,” Kharoufi said.
The expansion project, which is scheduled for completion by 2028, will primarily focus on increasing passenger-handling capacity as well as truck traffic, ensuring smoother movement through the port during peak periods.
Kharoufi stressed that sea travel will play a vital role in fan movement, particularly for supporters arriving from Europe.
“The reason for the extension is the volume of passengers we expect during the World Cup. Some supporters will come from Europe by sea, so we need to have more capacity,” he added.
Operated by the Tanger Med Group, the port is already one of the largest industrial-port platforms in the world and a critical pillar of Morocco’s foreign trade and logistics connectivity. The planned upgrade further strengthens Tanger Med’s position as a strategic gateway between Africa and Europe, while underlining Morocco’s broader preparations to successfully deliver one of the biggest sporting events in global history.
With infrastructure development accelerating across the country, Tanger Med’s expansion reflects Morocco’s ambition to combine world-class logistics, tourism growth, and major international events on the global stage.
