Tanger Med: Powering Morocco’s Green Ambition and Global Connectivity During AFCON 2025
On the northern edge of Africa, where the Mediterranean converges with some of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, the Port of Tanger Med has emerged as both an economic powerhouse and a beacon of sustainable innovation. As Morocco hosts the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2025) —a continental showcase drawing millions of fans and global media attention—Tanger Med stands at the intersection of logistics excellence and environmental stewardship, reflecting the Kingdom’s strategic ambition on regional and global stages.
On January 1, 2025, Tanger Med reached a historic milestone by operating entirely on 100% renewable electricity, a major leap in Morocco’s energy transition. Guided by a roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, the port rolled out a comprehensive decarbonization programme backed by a 2 billion dirham investment. The strategy blends renewable energy procurement with on-site generation to cover all operational power needs from clean sources.
Central to this transition is the deployment of Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems at key terminals, allowing docked vessels to connect directly to the port’s green grid instead of running auxiliary engines—significantly cutting emissions and improving air quality and worker health.
Complementing OPS, Tanger Med commissioned a 13 MW floating solar photovoltaic plant on the Oued Rmel dam reservoir, an innovative solution that generates clean energy while reducing water evaporation. Certified under ISO 50001 energy management standards, these initiatives bolster Tanger Med’s competitiveness among global maritime hubs and align with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal of carbon neutrality for shipping by 2050.
Beyond sustainability, Tanger Med has grown into a central logistics and industrial gateway linking Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas. With deepwater berths, high-capacity container terminals, and seamless rail-road connectivity, the port is indispensable to global supply chains.
Its industrial and logistics zones host over 1,300 companies across automotive manufacturing, aeronautics, textiles, agri-food, electronics and energy—creating tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs and driving economic growth across northern Morocco and beyond.
The port’s influence is set to expand further as Morocco advances plans for additional deepwater ports along both the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, aiming to replicate the Tanger Med model and reinforce the country’s role as a maritime bridge between Africa and the world.
As Morocco welcomed the continent for CAN 2025 —the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, held from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026 —Tanger Med played a vital, if largely behind-the-scenes, role in supporting the tournament’s logistics.
Hosted across six cities and nine modernized stadiums, including the Grand Stadium of Tangier, the competition coincided with major upgrades in transport, hospitality and urban infrastructure. Tangier became a key gateway city, receiving fans, teams and media by sea, air and land—quietly demonstrating Morocco’s capacity to deliver world-class events.
While football captured the spotlight, the tournament’s success depended on efficient supply chains and mobility systems. Tanger Med’s operational efficiency and connectivity underscored the often-overlooked role of ports in enabling seamless international events.
Beyond CAN 2025, Tanger Med embodies a broader vision for African economic integration and sustainable development. By marrying environmental responsibility with industrial expansion, the port offers a blueprint for future infrastructure across the continent.
Through partnerships, technical cooperation and engagement within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework, Tanger Med positions itself as a hub for intra-African trade, promoting shared growth, capacity building and the transfer of best practices in port management and sustainability.
