Former Nigeria international, Tijani Babangida has predicted ‘challenging times’ for Paul Onuachu following his move to English topflight side Southamption from Belgian giants Genk.
The Nigerian’s long-awaited move to English football finally came to fruition back on January 31 as the 28-year-old signed a three-and-a-half year deal on deadline day for a Saints in a guaranteed fee of 18 million euros which could rise to 21 million euros with performance-related add-ons.
Following the switch on deadline day and Nigeria legend Babangida has thrown his weight behind the move, hoping Onuachu keep scoring and take Southampton from the relegation waters.
“Many people will look at the position of Southampton and the position of Genk in Belgium and question the move,” Babaginda told media.
“I believe that if Onuachu plays in Southampton, he could help keep them from relegation. He only need five to ten good games. A solid time at the club could earn him a move to bigger teams Arsenal, Barcelona, Madrid or any other big clubs in Europe.
“He can participate in the Champions League where they can be able to see him more but I think he just came out to fight and face the challenges ahead of him.
“If he’s able to keep his goal scoring record but it’s a big challenge. He wants to face the challenge and try to see what he can do because that team he is, is fighting for survival. I hope he will make it and I believe he will make it.”
The 49 year old made 36 appearances and scored five goals for Nigeria.
