Titanic battles anticipated after 2024 NWFL Championship draw

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The draw for the 2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship was conducted on Friday, August 30, in Calabar, as 19 teams are set to do battle for two top-flight tickets.

Former NWFL Premiership winners, Pelican Stars, which are the hosts of this year’s Championship campaign, will face Heroes Queens, First Mahi, Castmog Ladies, and Imo Striker Queens in Group A1.

Group A2 will witness Kaduna Queens against Wazbak International, Osun Babes, Moje Queens, and Gallant Queens.

Chosen Generation, Ibom Angels, Unification FC, Delta Babes, and Papa Soccer will trade tackles in Group B1.

DreamStar will try to stage a return to the top flight starting with Group B2 games against Honey Badgers, Kwara Ladies, and Fortress Ladies.

Two venues will stage the 2024 NWFL Premiership. They are Saint Patrick College Pitch and UJ Esuene Stadium, both in Calabar.

The top teams from the groups will make it to the next stage, where two teams will seal promotion tickets to the NWFL Premiership.

Osun Babes and Ibom Angels recently dropped to the second-tier women’s league and will hope to stage an instant return to the Premiership.

Pelican Stars and Honey Badgers, which narrowly missed out on promotion last season, dream of making it to the top flight this time around.

The two teams that will gain promotion to the NWFL Premiership will be determined at the end of the second-tier league on September 8.
