By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The former coach of Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership side, Bayelsa Queens, Domo Okara, was laid to rest in Nembe, his hometown, on Thursday.

The 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League bronze-winning coach’s death was described as a real tragedy by the club chairman, Pastor Robin Apreala.

“We share in the sorrow and pains of the Okara family at this period and we pray that God will grant the family the courage to bear the loss as we pray for the repose of the soul of our departed coach,” Apreala who was represented by Mr Richard Kalango said.

“It is our prayer as a club that God continues to comfort the entire family and give them the fortitude to bear the grievous loss.” He concluded.

Okara took over as the coach of the Prosperity Girls after the resignation of Moses Aduku who won the league title in 2022.

He led the team to the 2022 West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League title in Cote d’Ivoire.

At the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League, Okara tutored Bayelsa Queens to Nigeria’s best finish at the tournament with a bronze medal after a 1-0 win over Simba Queens from Tanzania.

He was also in charge of the team as they reached the final of the 2023 NWFL Premiership Super Six as the team lost 2-1 to Delta Queens and went on to win the 2023 President Federation Cup against Rivers Angels.

His last outing was a third-place finish at the 2024 NWFL Premiership Super Six in Yenegoa before his demise a few days afterward to cardiac arrest.
