Tochi Chukwuani Backs Emmanuel Fernandez After Super Eagles Breakthrough

Tochi Chukwuani has praised Emmanuel Fernandez following his maiden call-up to the Super Eagles, attributing the defender’s rise to his impressive performances for Rangers FC.

Fernandez, who joined Rangers from Peterborough United last summer, has quickly established himself as a key figure at the club. Meanwhile, Chukwuani arrived in January from Sturm Graz and has had the opportunity to closely observe his teammate’s development.

The centre-back has underlined his attacking threat by scoring six goals in 27 appearances across all competitions, further boosting his reputation as a goalscoring defender.

Fernandez also made an immediate impact on the international stage, scoring on his first start for Nigeria in a 2–2 draw against the Jordan national football team.

Speaking at a press conference, Chukwuani lauded his teammate’s form and progression.

“His form has been excellent so far, and long may it last. That’s just a big kudos to him for doing well here at Rangers and then earning the call-up,” he said.

“And for him to also go and score on his first start is just fantastic, so I hope he can continue with the goals here at Rangers.”

Chukwuani also highlighted Fernandez’s personality and growing influence within the squad.

“He is a big character in the dressing room. Obviously now with the performances getting better, he’s also taking more and more responsibilities.”

Born in London, Fernandez remains eligible to represent England until he makes a competitive appearance for the Super Eagles, but his early impact suggests he could become a key figure for Nigeria moving forward.
