Toni Payne breaks duck for Everton in loss to Arsenal FC

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria forward Toni Payne scored her first-ever goal for the English Women’s Super League (WSL) side Everton FC in a league clash on Friday.

The goal was not enough to prevent the Toffees from a 3-1 loss against Arsenal FC.

Alessia Russo broke the deadlock for the Gunners in the 24th minute from Frida Leonhardsen-Maanum’s assist.

12 minutes later, Payne restored parity for her side with her maiden goal.

Former Chelsea player Maren Mjelden scored an own goal to restore Renee Sleger’s side lead.

Russo’s second goal in the 90th minute sealed a 3-1 win.

Payne, who had provided three assists in the WSL this season, will be glad to open her goal account for the Toffees.

Everton FC occupy the eighth position on the WSL log with 16 points after 16 games.
