U-23 AFCONQ: Akanni Qudus promises Nigeria victory against Guinea in Morocco

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria U-23 star Akanni Qudus says despite the team’s 0-0 draw with Guinea in the U-23 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers, his side will give their best to earn victory in the return leg on Wednesday.

The Olympic Eagles failed to take advantage of home soil and finished their U23 Africa Cup of Nations final qualifying fixture, first leg match against Guinea 0-0 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

To add to the team’s woes, Salisu Yusuf’s side will be without defender Christopher Nwaeze due to a suspension and the Remo Stars man admitted that he was below-par in the first leg but vows to put up a good show in Morocco.

“We shouldn’t allow the first leg result to affect us that much. What’s the main focus now is to work hard ahead of the next game in Morocco,” Qudus told Brila FM.

“Personally, I didn’t do much in the first game and will have to do more in Morocco so that we can qualify for the AFCON. I promise Nigerians that will perform more than before in the return leg with the hope of coming back with good results.”

The return legs will be played next week with the winners over two legs qualifying for the U23 AFCON.

The top three nations at the U23 AFCON final tournament will also be guaranteed a place in the Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
