Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubairu, has praised his team’s tactical discipline and proactive approach after Nigeria secured a place in the knockout stage of the FIFA U-20 World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Colombia on Sunday night.
The result, achieved in the final group-stage match, ensured the seven-time African champions progressed to the round of 16, where they are set to face tournament hosts Argentina.
Colombia took an early lead through Kener Gonzalez, but Nigeria responded in the closing stages when team captain Daniel Bameyi calmly converted a penalty to level the score.
Speaking after the match, Zubairu said the team executed their game plan effectively despite the physical and technical threat posed by the South Americans.
“It wasn’t easy, but we stood our ground and were proactive,” Zubairu told FIFA.com.
“We knew they were physically strong and good on the ball, so we tried to deny them passing lanes, and that gave us a little edge.”
Zubairu also emphasized that the team’s primary objective had been to qualify for the knockout round, regardless of the opposition awaiting them.
“All we wanted was to qualify for the next round, and we are not worried about who we have to face,” he added.
The Flying Eagles will now turn their focus to the high-stakes clash against Argentina, with a place in the quarterfinals on the line.
