UEFA awards Real Madrid’s disputed second goal against Leipzig to Arda Guler

UEFA has confirmed that Arda Guler, rather than Kylian Mbappe, scored Real Madrid’s second goal against Leipzig in the Champions League.

Real Madrid hosted Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Spanish capital on Wednesday, in the third round of the Champions League league phase.

The goal came in the 52nd minute. Jude Bellingham delivered a cross towards Mbappe, whose header was heading into the net before Guler made contact with the ball on the goal line.

The involvement of Guler led to uncertainty among supporters and media outlets over whether the goal should be credited to Mbappe or the Turkey international.

UEFA ended the debate on its official website, naming Guler as the scorer. An accompanying image showed the player touching the ball before it completely crossed the line.

The goal is Guler’s first in this season’s Champions League and his third in the competition overall.

His previous two goals came in the same match, when he scored twice against Bayern Munich during the previous season.
