Victor Osimhen: Why I Joined Galatasaray

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen has revealed the reasons behind his decision to join Galatasaray on loan from Napoli, a move that took many by surprise, especially after failed transfer attempts to Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Al Ahli in the summer of 2024.

In an exclusive interview with Super Eagles legend John Mikel Obi, Osimhen explained that despite the shock among fans regarding his arrival, the decision to move to Galatasaray was “quite easy” for him.

He emphasized that the club’s manager, Okan Buruk, played a significant role in convincing him to make the switch.

“Most of them [Galatasaray fans] say that they didn’t believe Osimhen is going to come to their club,” Osimhen said.

“For me, it was easy to be able to come here because the coach also played a huge role in making me come here.”

Osimhen also shared that he had been closely following the club’s matches, especially since he is friends with former Napoli teammate Dries Mertens. This connection helped Osimhen develop a greater understanding of the club before his move.

“I also watched their games because I am very close to Dries [Mertens], so I watched their games even before I dreamt of coming here,” Osimhen revealed.

In addition to tactical aspects and familiar faces, Osimhen spoke about a deeper connection with the identity of Galatasaray, particularly the club’s symbol — the lion. He identified with the lion as a reflection of his own playing style and his personal journey.

“You know the symbol of the club is a Lion, and I think I fall into this category in terms of the way I play and in terms of the way I’ve survived through life’s journey,” Osimhen explained.

He also discussed the club’s ambitious goals for the season, saying, “When I spoke with the coach, he told me about the project and about the goal the club set for itself this season, and we have the same mindset.”

With a clear vision for both his personal growth and the club’s aspirations, Osimhen’s move to Galatasaray marks the beginning of a promising new chapter in his career.
