Nigeria’s next opponents at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Algeria, could face disciplinary action as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) investigates alleged breaches of its statutes and tournament regulations.
CAF confirmed it has opened a formal inquiry into possible violations committed during the ongoing tournament, though specific details have not yet been made public.
The governing body emphasized its commitment to maintaining the integrity and proper conduct of WAFCON in accordance with its rules.
Algeria, who currently sit on four points after two group matches, are pushing for a place in the quarter-finals. Any sanction could significantly impact their chances of progressing to the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, the Super Falcons, who secured qualification to the quarter-finals with back-to-back wins—including a commanding victory over Botswana—will face Algeria in their final Group B match on Sunday evening at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium.
Although the tie is a dead rubber for Nigeria in terms of qualification, the nine-time champions are expected to push for a win to finish top of the group.
CAF has not yet provided a timeline for the conclusion of the investigation or any potential disciplinary measures.
